During the morning work time, the girls move around the room participating in centers. In these centers, they are able to practice fine motor skills (which helps strengthen hands for handwriting). They practice forming letters and numbers, They create and build with loose parts. We also provide them with activities that allow them to investigate and draw conclusions on their own. During this time, Mrs. Crump and Mrs. Ivy are able to work in small groups and give the girls a more individualized instruction by playing small group math games or learning reading skills.
At Hutchison, the girls are so fortunate to be exposed to so many extra classes throughout their day. Usually mid morning, we go to one or two special classes. The girls love going to Spanish with Senora Chelsoi, Music with Mrs. Crowley, Creative Drama with Mrs. Randall, Movement with Mrs. Parsons, Science with Mrs. Wesson, Library with Mrs. Thomas, the farm with Mrs. Riddle and Chinese with Mrs. Tian. These teachers springboard off of what we are learning in the classroom by introducing the girls to relevant vocabulary in other languages and provide them with activities and experiments that further their understandings of our studies.
Morning Meeting and Jobs
We looked at the globe and google maps to determine if we could drive. The girls decided it would be best to fly in a helicopter! The road might be too icey they said.
What are these letters for?
Could we miss school to go to the North Pole? We have lots or car seats. Everyone could fit in my mom’s car. -Blair
You can’t drive to the North Pole. -Ruthie
Yes you can! My dad drove to the North Pole to get my puppy dog. - Nora Cait
We also studied some maps of popular places in our city that we were familiar with. Once we understood what a map looked like, the girls had the opportunity to make their very own map. We decided we would make a map of our campus. We took a walk to all the important places around our campus that we wanted to include on our map.
We went to the new farm, the big tree, the lake, Dr. Ring's house, the playground and our building. Then the girls got to work on their maps of our campus!
