Ms. Holcomb & Mrs. Childress
Halloween was a great day in JK! All of our little pumpkins enjoyed the party and showing off their costumes to anyone they passed. Happy Halloween!
What is family?
It's like the people you live with. Your mom, your dad, your brothers.
I don't have brothers but I have sisters in my family.
I have grandmas and grandpas but they don't live in my house.
Are they still in your family?
Yeah, I think so. They just don't sleep with me.
Your family is people who show you lots of love and give you hugs and dinner.
Sometimes if you don't have a family or they live really far away you can find some friends and they can be your family!
Books we shared together:
What is a home?
Where you live in.- Emma
You stay inside your home because you don't always get hot.- Lilly
Where you live until you go on vacation.- Kadence
Your home is where you eat food, have a bed, and you get family and love.- Raven
It's where you grow up.- Clara
I never ever leave there until you need to leave like come to school.- Eloise
When you get mosquito bites you go inside there or when you are sick you stay there and rest and stuff.- Stella
Some of the questions the girls had about houses before we began our study::
How do you make a house?
What are the triangles on top of the house?
Why do we need windows?
What makes them stay forever and ever?
How can you make a house SO big?
Where do you get the stuff to make a house?
Books we shared together:
As part of our Everyday Math Curriculum we added another math component to the conversation of houses. We then researched and explored the concept of addresses. Below you will see some of that process.
Won't you be my neighbor?
Conversations continued and we began to wonder about the other people and places that make up our communities. First, we considered what a community is. By definition, a community refers to a group of people living in a particular place. Our girls grasped this definition immediately.
The people who live next to me are my neighbors. They have kids too and we get to play together.
I see stop signs in my community. That tells people not to drive and then they can go again.
I have store in my community like Daniel Tiger. We have a bakery and we get to go get donuts after dinner if we eat all our food.
The girls worked independently and drew things they find in a community. The girls drew everything from houses to the police station to a school. We sat down together and wondered what we needed to put it all together.
We need roads!
Yeah so the cars can drive.
We need stop signs too so they know to stop!
I think we need sidewalks so people can go places on walks.
I see lots of trees outside in the community. We should draw some of those.
I always see birds in my community.
And butterflies too.
I think we should make some cars because you have to go lots of places. You cant just stay inside all the time.
Welcome to our JK class! We are a group of busy bees having fun and learning so much. We cant wait to share our projects and fun happenings with you here!
